Independence is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 7,133. Independence was originally Center, and under the latter name was laid out in 1830.
With the opening of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1827, Independence Township became accessible to trade and settlers. After farming, the major industry in early Independence was quarrying. High quality sandstone and bluestone were quarried for sixty years leaving lovely lakes and ponds scattered throughout Independence. Read about Copley here.
